Staff Reporter:

Allegation of embezzling about Tk 1.21 crore from the funds of mosque and graveyard has been surfaced against the Awami League leader Motiur Rahman Sarker of Fazilnagor village in Ullapara upazila of Sirajganj district.

Meanwhile, several written complaints have been submitted to the UNO of Ullapara and Deputy Commissioner (DC) in Sirajganj demanding fair investigation and exemplary punishment against the money plunderer. Besides, a case has been filed with Ullapara Police Station in this connection accusing Motiur Rahman and his eight other associates.

The complainants also urged the authorities concerned to take necessary initiatives to refund the money to the incumbent committee leaders.

According to the written complaints, Motiur Rahman Sarker, son of late Eken Ali Sarker and also former president of the relevant mosque and graveyard committee in collaboration with some local Awami League leaders and activists has misappropriated about Tk 1.21 crore earned by using the lands and ponds of the mosque and graveyard in the village for the last 17 years.

The complainants alleged that, Motiur went undercover just after fall of the Awami League government on August 5. After a few days, he returned to the area and started roaming openly. But, when the new committee wanted back the money of the mosque and graveyard funds, he refused to pay and even threatened the new committee members saying that, if they create pressure on him for the money, they will face dire consequences. In this circumstance, a feasibility of creating chaos in the area has been loomed.

This is why, local headmen are seeking intervention of the law enforcers and administration in this regard to avert untoward incident in future.

When this correspondent tried to contact with Motiur Rahman Sarker over cell phone for his comment in this regard, he could not be reached.
