TDS Desk:

Out of 59 newly appointed deputy commissioners (DCs), the appointments of eight including Sirajganj have been cancelled.

Ministry of Public Administration Senior Secretary Dr Md Mokhlesur Rahman shared the information with journalists on Wednesday.

The districts where the DC appointments were cancelled are Lakshmipur, Joypurhat, Kushtia, Rajshahi, Sirajganj, Shariatpur, Dinajpur and Rajbari.

Additionally, changes were made in the DC positions of four more districts: the DC of Tangail was transferred to Panchagarh, the DC of Nilphamari to Tangail, the DC of Natore to Lakshmipur and the DC of Panchagarh to Nilphamari.

The senior secretary said after a selection committee meeting, the appointments of the eight individuals were cancelled.

Earlier, on Monday and Tuesday, new DCs were appointed in 59 districts across the country.

On Tuesday, a group of deputy secretary-level civil servants caused uproar at the Ministry of Public Administration, protesting their exclusion from these appointments.

The government made the decision amid a reshuffle in the field-level administration that has left many officers disgruntled.

“As many as 34 people were appointed on Tuesday. Now, eight of them are not deputy commissioners anymore. On Monday, 25 DCs were appointed; among them the Sylhet DC has been changed.”

With the change in power, the interim government has made major widespread changes to the administration. As part of these changes, 25 new deputy commissioners were appointed on Monday and 34 on Tuesday.

However, those deputy secretaries ‘deprived’ (of deserved benefits) during the Awami government staged protests throughout the day on Tuesday. Finally, the government assured them they would cancel the notices.

The senior secretary shared the decisions about 12 new appointees the following day.

A selection committee prepared a list of people fit to appoint as deputy, the secretary said. “The committee sat for a review today and their immediate action was to cancel the appointment of eight deputy commissioners,” the secretary said.
