Former adviser to the interim government Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain is set to join the National Citizen Party (NCP) and assume the role of its spokesperson, party sources said on Monday afternoon (29 December).
According to the sources, the NCP has arranged a press conference at 6pm this evening to formally announce his joining. The development was also reported by Samakal.
BBC Bangla reported that Asif Mahmud is joining the NCP as a student representative. A senior party leader told the outlet that he is likely to be entrusted with the responsibility of party spokesperson.
Asif Mahmud had earlier resigned from his post as adviser to the interim government with the intention of contesting the upcoming national election.
An NCP leader told BBC Bangla that the emergency press conference called by the party this evening at its central office is primarily to mark Asif Mahmud’s formal entry into the party.
Citing party sources, BBC Bangla reported that although he will not be participating in the election at this stage, Asif Mahmud will take charge as the NCP spokesperson.
Earlier, Asif Mahmud had collected nomination papers to contest the election from the Dhaka-10 constituency. At the same time, his supporters also collected nomination papers on his behalf from the Cumilla-3 constituency.
However, as of this evening, there has been no information confirming the submission of nomination papers from either constituency.
