A convoy of students participating in the “March for Unity” movement against discrimination was attacked in Mollahat upazila of Bagerhat on Tuesday. The ensuing clash left at least 20 people injured.

The convoy, consisting of 25 buses carrying students from Khulna city to Dhaka, came under attack near the Madrasa Ghat area around 11:30am.

According to students, the assailants, allegedly prepared in advance, stopped the vehicles and assaulted several participants.

The students claimed that despite the incident happening near the local police station, law enforcement officers remained unresponsive.

Zahurul Tanveer, the Khulna coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, said: “Our convoy was travelling peacefully when it was ambushed. Many of our members were injured in the attack.”

Another coordinator, Minhajul Abedin Sahad, described the incident as premeditated.

“This attack will not deter us from our mission. The blood of our brothers has been spilled, and justice must be served promptly,” he said.

The students further alleged that some local residents appeared to assist the attackers during the assault.

Mollahat police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shafiqul Islam said that a clash broke out between transport workers and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement convoy following a dispute over a bus from Imad Paribahan yielding way. Police arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control.
