An attempt to murder case was filed against former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed and nine others for attacking Golam Mohammad Rabbani alias Nayon Bangalee, a Supreme Court lawyer and human rights activist, near Matshya Bhaban area in the capital about 11 years back.
Begum Meherunnesa Haque, mother of Nayon Bangalee and member of national executive committee of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), on
Wednesday filed a petition with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate (MM) Arobia Khanom.
The court, after hearing the statement of the complainant, instructed the officer-in-charge (OC) of Shahbagh Police Station to receive the complaint as a first information report (FIR).
The other accused of the case are – former President of Awami Jubo League (Dhaka south city unit) Ismail Chowdhury Samrat, former Member of Parliament (MP) from Bhola-3 constituency Nurunnabi Chowdhury Shayon, former MP from Mirpur area Elias Mollah, former MP from Cumilla-11 Mujibul Hauque Mujib, former chiefs of the Detective Branch (DB) Krishna Pada Ray and Syed Bazlul Karim, former Joint Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Biplob Kumar Sarkar, the then OC of Shahbagh Police Station Nasir Uddin and Personal Officer of Mujibul Haque Alamgir Kabir Majumder.
Besides, the petitioner also accused another 20 to 30 unnamed people for attempting to murder of her son.
According to the FIR, victim Nayon Bangalee was attacked by the accused led by the then OC of Shahbagh Police Station Nasir and Ismail Chowdhury Samrat at Matshaya Bhaban crossing on 22 November 2013 when he was leading a BNP procession towards Shahbagh after attending a party programme at the Jatiya Press Club.
He received serious injuries during the attack that was reported in various news media at that time. The victim is now under treatment abroad, the FIR added.
