Bangladesh suffered a late collapse on the second day of the opening Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, slipping from a commanding 458-4 to 484-9 at stumps.
Debutant seamer Milan Rathnayake sparked the turnaround with three quick wickets in the final session, removing Jaker Ali, Taijul Islam and Nayeem Hasan in short succession. Nayeem edged a delivery angling across off stump to the keeper, becoming the ninth batter to fall.
At stumps, Bangladesh were 484 for 9 after 151 overs, with Hasan Mahmud and Nahid Rana unbeaten.
Rathnayake had earlier bowled Jaker for 8 and Taijul for 6, reversing the momentum after Bangladesh appeared poised for a much bigger total.
Litton Das missed out on a century, dismissed for 90 after gloving a reverse sweep that ballooned off his arm and was caught by Kusal Mendis. His 123-ball innings included 11 fours and one six.
His dismissal came shortly after a 149-run fifth-wicket stand with Mushfiqur Rahim, who earlier departed for 163. The veteran right-hander was trapped lbw by Asitha Fernando after a review confirmed an umpire’s call. He had survived a similar appeal just before a two-hour rain delay.
Sri Lanka used up their final review unsuccessfully against Mushfiqur, with replays showing the ball narrowly missed the edge.
Play resumed at 4:45 pm local time following rain, with 18 overs lost from the day’s allocation. A maximum of 31.4 overs were possible in the final session.
Earlier in the day, Najmul Hossain Shanto added 148 before chipping a full-length delivery to Angelo Mathews at mid-off.
