Bangladesh will not take part in any proxy war on behalf of the United States in Myanmar under the pretext of a “humanitarian corridor,” National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman said on Sunday.

He dismissed such claims as “disinformation” and “baseless rumours”.

“We are not involved in any discussion or agreement regarding a humanitarian corridor. No such decision has been taken. What’s being spread is nothing but propaganda and misinformation,” he stated.

He made the remarks while speaking as a special guest at a seminar on Rohingya repatriation, jointly organised by the Armed Forces Division and Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) at the university’s auditorium in Dhaka.

As the High Representative on the Rohingya Issue, Rahman stressed that Bangladesh remains committed to respecting Myanmar’s sovereignty and has no interest in contributing to further instability in the conflict-ridden Rakhine State.

“We continue to reassure Myanmar that Bangladesh does not wish to see any renewed unrest in their territory. Our position is based on mutual respect and peaceful coexistence,” he said.

Addressing the controversy over the much-talked-about “humanitarian corridor,” Rahman clarified that no such plan is under discussion. Instead, he said, talks have taken place around a possible channel for humanitarian assistance delivery—an entirely different concept.

“This is not about a corridor. We discussed channels to deliver aid to Rakhine. Corridors and channels are not the same. If any such channel is established, it would have to be under UN supervision to facilitate the delivery of food and relief,” Khalilur Rahman said.

His comments come amid growing regional speculation that Western powers, particularly the US, are seeking ways to expand humanitarian access to conflict zones in Myanmar, possibly using Bangladesh as a staging ground.
