Banned BCL men attack police, torch vehicle in Gopalganj

Leaders and activists of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) allegedly assaulted police and set a vehicle on fire in Ulpur area of Gopalganj Sadar upazila on Wednesday morning during the National Citizens’ Party’s (NCP) ongoing “July March” programme.

The incident took place around 10:30 am. Video footage shows several Chhatra League men beating and injuring a police officer before chasing him down the road.

Mir Sajedur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Gopalganj Sadar Police Station, said the NCP was scheduled to hold a rally at the municipal park in the town as part of its month-long programme. Central leaders of the party were expected to join the event.

“To foil the rally, followers of Chhatra League’s district general secretary Ataur Rahman Pial attacked police in Ulpur and vandalised and torched a vehicle,” he said.

Mir Sajedur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Gopalganj Sadar Police Station, said the NCP was set to hold a rally at the town’s municipal park as part of its month-long programme, with central leaders expected to attend.

“To foil the event, BCL men led by district unit general secretary Ataur Rahman Pial attacked police in Ulpur, vandalised a vehicle and set it on fire,” he said.

No casualties were reported in the incident, and police were working to bring the situation under control, he added.

Launched on 1 July, the NCP’s “July March to Rebuild the Nation” is being observed across different districts. Today’s Gopalganj event was part of the same programme.

On Tuesday (July 15 ), Sarjis Alam, the party’s chief organiser for the northern region, posted details of the Gopalganj march on his verified Facebook page.
