The Central Bank’s financial intelligence unit has sought the bank account information of former speaker of parliament Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, her husband and children.

Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has sent letters in this regard to various banks and financial institutions in the country.

In the BFIU letter, instructions were given to submit the account information of Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, her husband Syed Ishtiaq Hossain, their son Syed Ibtesham Rafiq and daughter Lamisa Shirin Hossain.

Shireen Sharmin Chaudhury was last elected Member of Parliament from a seat in Rangpur. After the Awami League came to power in the 2008 election, Abdul Hamid was elected Speaker. When he was elected as the President, Shireen Sharmin was elected as Speaker on 30 April 2013. She has been in this position since then.

Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was elected Speaker again after Awami League won the election on 7 January and formed the government. Sheikh Hasina left the country after resigning from the post of prime minister on 5 August, in the face of the student uprising. The president then dissolved the Parliament and on 8 August the Interim Government was sworn in.

Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury resigned as Speaker on 2 September, 27 days after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government. After submission of resignation letter to President Md Sahabuddin it was accepted. A government gazette disclosed that the resignation was executed on the same day.

A murder case was filed against Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, former commerce minister Tipu Munshi and 17 others in connection with the shooting death of gold worker Muslim Uddin in Rangpur. Tipu Munshi is in jail in this case now.
