Press secretary Shafiqul Alam has said that Bangladesh has got special advantages on US tariff issues due to the personal acquaintance of Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government.
He said this at a roundtable discussion held on the topics of Bangladesh’s position and challenges on the US tariff issue on Saturday.
Press secretary of the Chief Advisor said, “Bangladesh has got special advantages on the tariff issue due to the personal acquaintance of Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor in the US. The interim government was confident from the beginning to reduce the tariff by 20 percent.”
He said, ‘Targets will be made to reduce the tariff further. Relations with the US will improve further in the future. Exports there will increase further.”
Shafiqul Alam also said, “during the negotiations, the discussions were held keeping in mind the impact on other markets.”
Regarding the Bangladeshi economy, he said, “Bangladesh’s economy will become stronger through increased exports to the United States.”
Initially, the United States imposed a 35 percent counter-tariff on Bangladeshi products. Later, the Trump administration reduced that tariff to 20 percent on July 31.
