The octogenarian father of Abu Sayed, a Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur student killed in police firing during last year’s July uprising, broke down in tears as he appealed to the International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Thursday.

“Before my death, I want to see justice for my son,” he said.

“I hoped that during my lifetime, my son would get a job. Since they killed my son, now I hope before my death, I can witness justice for my son’s killing,” said Mokbul Hossain, 85, testifying as the first prosecution witness in the case.

Abu Sayed, the sixth of Mokbul’s six sons and three daughters, was shot dead on July 16, 2024, during protests in Rangpur.

His death, amid nationwide student demonstrations, fuelled the mass uprising that culminated in the fall of the Sheikh Hasina regime on August 5.

“Hearing the news of Abu Sayed’s death felt like the sky fell on my head,” Mokbul said, struggling to hold back tears.

Of the 30 accused in the crimes against humanity case over Abu Sayed’s killing, 24 remain absconding, but the tribunal continues proceedings in their absence.
