Dinajpur’s temperature dropped to 11.8°C on Friday morning, the lowest in the country, bringing life to a standstill in the northern district.

According to Tofazzal Hossain, who is in charge of the Dinajpur met office, this is the lowest temperature recorded in Dinajpur this season.

He warned that the cold will intensify further this month, with several cold waves expected to sweep through the region.

During the day, the sun occasionally comes out, leading to a humid, stuffy atmosphere, but from evening until morning, dense fog, icy winds from the north, and chilling cold prevail, he said.

Due to the thick fog, vehicles are forced to operate with headlights on throughout the day.

The cold weather has severely impacted the lives of daily wage earners and low-income families, many of whom lack proper warm clothing.

They are struggling to cope, often unable to go to work early in the morning due to the weather conditions.

The dense fog has also increased the risk of road accidents.

Meanwhile, Dr Mashiur Rahman, a pediatric specialist, said cold-related illnesses such as respiratory issues, pneumonia, and bronchitis are on the rise, particularly among children and the elderly.

Many are being hospitalized as a result, he added.

Residents of riverbank areas, especially those with limited income, are enduring severe hardships.

In such circumstances, the people of Dinajpur have called on the government to distribute warm clothing to help alleviate the suffering caused by the extreme cold.
