The body of journalist Rahanuma Sarah, 32, of private television channel GTV was recovered in floating condition in the capital’s Hatirjheel. She was taken unconscious to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) at around 2:30 am on Tuesday (August 27) where the duty doctor declared her dead.
Rahanuma Sarah worked as a Newsroom Editor for GTV. She lived in the capital’s Kallyanpur. Sarah is the daughter of Bakhtiar Shikdar of Islambagh Krishnapur village in Sonaimuri upazila of Noakhali.
At around 11 pm on Tuesday, Rahanuma Sarah wrote on her social media Facebook – “I am blessed to have a friend like you. May Allah bless you always. Hope all your dreams come true soon. I know we have planned a lot together. Sorry, we can’t fulfill our plans. May Allah bless you in every aspect of your life.”
In another post shortly before this, she wrote – “It is better to die than to be alive”.
Sarah’s husband Syed Shuvro said that they got married seven years ago without informing the family after an affair. “Yesterday Sarah went to the office and did not return home at night, but sent the house rent money to a person at around 10:30 pm,” he mentioned.
“Later I called her and told her ‘you usually come home at night, but why did you send the money to someone else?’ Then she said ‘I am busy’ and hung up. Later, at around 3 pm, I received the news that she had jumped into the water of Hatirjheel Lake. After came to DMCH, I found her dead,” he said.
“There was no marital dispute between us. But since some days ago my wife has wanted to separate. After that, both of us were supposed to go to the Kazi office and get a divorce. In this country’s situation, we could not go to the Kazi office,” Sarah’s husband Syed Shuvro added.
Pedestrian Sagar, who rescued Rahanuma and took her to the hospital, said that he saw the woman drowning in the lake. After that, she was quickly rescued and taken to Dhaka Medical, the doctor in charge conducted an examination and said that the woman was no longer alive.
