Staff Correspondent:
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that their goal is to establish a democratic system through elections, adding that the party does not believe in anything other than elections. “The entire nation believes that a swift election is now the only way forward to overcome the current political crisis and move towards democracy,” he said.
He made the remarks at a press conference held at the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office on Wednesday (August 6) in response to the July declaration and electoral announcement made by the chief adviser.
In response to a journalist’s question, Mirza Fakhrul said, “Those who are disappointed have always remained disappointed. Although they may not have given an official response yet, their immediate reaction was positive. We hope they will adopt a constructive outlook and help pave the way for a national and democratic transition.”
Referring to Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, Fakhrul said, “Dr. Yunus has certainly proven through his work so far that he will not do anything in the future regarding free and fair elections that could be called into question.”
Welcoming the July declaration, Fakhrul said the BNP believes that the commitments made by political parties in the declaration will initiate a transformation towards a new democratic Bangladesh. He added that this will create an opportunity to build a truly progressive and prosperous Bangladesh based on equality, human values, and justice.
Fakhrul also expressed heartfelt gratitude and congratulations to the political parties, students, farmers, workers, and people from all walks of life who participated in the movement — including those who were martyred, injured, or disabled in the struggle.
