Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has served a show-cause notice on its Chairperson’s adviser, Advocate Fazlur Rahman, for making what the party described as “controversial and misleading” remarks about the historic July–August mass uprising.

According to the notice, issued from BNP’s central office on Sunday (24 August), Rahman has been asked to provide a written explanation within 24 hours.

The party accused Rahman of repeatedly making derogatory comments about 2024 mass uprising, in which, according to BNP, more than 1,500 students and citizens were killed—including over 450 BNP activists—and 30,000 people injured during the movement for restoring democracy.

The notice stated, “Your remarks dishonor the supreme sacrifices of the martyrs and go against the ideals of the mass uprising. They have caused severe public outrage and tarnished the party’s image. Many believe your comments are part of a deliberate conspiracy to undermine the movement and even offend religious sentiments.”

The party further warned that organizational action may be taken against Rahman if he fails to provide a satisfactory response.

When contacted, Fazlur Rahman said he had not officially received the letter.

“I have not received any show-cause notice yet. I am only hearing about it from you. Once I get the letter, I will respond accordingly,” he told reporters.
