The BNP is planning to ensure participation of all citizens in the economy, the party’s Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said on Thursday (September 4).

“Democracy cannot be limited to politics alone; the economy must also be democratised. Every citizen of Bangladesh must become a stakeholder in economic and development activities,” the BNP leader said at a discussion meeting titled “July Uprising First Anniversary and Joint Movement Allies” held at the National Press Club.

“From women to retired citizens, everyone must be engaged in productive activities. Our plan is to ensure that every person can contribute to the economy,” he added.

Khasru noted that when citizens’ incomes increase, their living standards will improve, they will pay taxes, and they will demand accountability for proper use of public money. “People will be able to say — my tax money cannot be wasted; it must be used properly for the country’s development.”

Criticising certain political parties, he said, “The people are the true owners of Bangladesh, and they must decide. Political parties must change their culture, become tolerant, and learn to respect differences of opinion.”

Speaking about the future, he said democratic culture must be re-established through continuous free and fair elections.

“Elections are a filtration process. It reflects the will of the people. There is no alternative. If anyone seeks another path, it will bring disastrous consequences for Bangladesh,” he warned.

The BNP leader urged all to work in unity for the country’s future.
