The BNP is ready to sign the July Charter at any time, party’s Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed said on Monday (August 4).

Talking to reporters at his home in Dhaka’s Gulshan, Salahuddin said that BNP responded to the July Charter with some amendments on 30 July, right after receiving it.

He emphasised that BNP has extended maximum cooperation for the implementation of the charter.

“The July Declaration holds significant historical and political value,” he said. “BNP had responded to the draft proposal back in February. However, the party disagreed with the decision not to present on 26 March in the charter.

“BNP also believes that state and constitutional recognition should come through the Fourth Schedule,” he added.

He further noted that BNP’s proposed amendments to the July Declaration must be acknowledged. If not, the party will issue an official response following the declaration’s presentation.

Addressing criticisms that BNP is not cooperating or is unwilling to sign the charter without guarantees, Salahuddin clarified that BNP has shown utmost commitment and called on all to maintain unity against fascism.

Salahuddin also pointed out that BNP has yet to receive a formal invitation to the declaration event scheduled to be held on Manik Mia Avenue.

Regarding the consensus commission, he shared that discussions were held on 19 key reform points, with BNP agreeing to 12 and issuing notes of dissent on 7.
