BNP Vice Chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo has reaffirmed that his party will persist with its movement until democracy is restored through free and fair elections, which he described as the cornerstone of maintaining a democratic process.

“We are committed to restoring democracy through impartial elections. Over the years, we have endured repression and legal harassment, with around 60,000 cases filed against 60-65 lakh BNP members. Our movement will continue until a truly democratic government is established,” Mintoo said in a recent interview.

Mintoo recounted the BNP’s 17-year-long struggle for democratic governance, criticising the last four elections as manipulated efforts to keep the Awami League in power. He said that their goal remains the establishment of a government accountable to the people.

“We aim to end the existing authoritarian practices and ensure elections are held fairly. While we do not oppose the interim government, we expect it to organise a free and fair election through necessary reforms,” he said.

Highlighting the importance of reforms, Mintoo said that holding elections is essential for political stability and social harmony. “Without elections, governments lack legitimacy. People’s power is the foundation of all reforms,” he added.

The BNP has proposed a 31-point state reform agenda encompassing constitutional, institutional, social and economic changes.

“Reforms require a mandate from the people, as the constitution is a social contract between the government and its citizens.

Any reform without public approval will not be sustainable,” he said. Mintoo urged the interim government to consult political parties and reach a consensus on reforms needed for fair elections. Mintoo outlined the BNP’s vision for a new dimension in politics, emphasising unity among political parties to address national issues.

“Our acting chairman envisions a strong economy and improved quality of life for all. To achieve this, we need a national consensus that transcends political rivalry,” he said.

Stressing the need for harmony between electoral winners and losers, he said that a lack of unity on fundamental national issues would harm the country.

On the trial of Awami League leaders accused of crimes, Mintoo advocated for justice irrespective of political affiliation.

“Wrongdoers, whether they are politicians or businessmen, must be held accountable. However, banning political parties or excluding them from elections could create chaos in the future,” he said.

Addressing allegations of extortion against BNP members, Mintoo said the party has expelled around 1,100 members and is investigating 1,200 more.

“Our leadership is clear: no one can misuse power or take the law into their own hands,” he said.

Dismissing rumours about a “minus two” formula to sideline the Zia family, Mintoo asserted their central role in BNP politics.  “Khaleda Zia may be ageing, but Tarique Rahman will soon take the helm. It is a daydream to think the Zia family can be excluded from politics,” he said.

On foreign relations, Mintoo advocated maintaining respectful and equitable ties with neighbouring countries, including India.

“Good relations are vital for politics and the economy, but they must be based on mutual respect,” he said. Looking ahead, Mintoo expressed hope for elections in 2025, the elimination of inequality, and the restoration of people’s power.

“We aspire to build a nation where democratic values thrive, and citizens regain their rightful power through free elections,” he concluded.
