The body of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Mukul Hossain, 37, who went missing in the Padma River while attempting to arrest a suspect in Kumarkhali upazila of Kushtia, has been recovered.

ASI Mukul’s body was found near Nazirganj Ferry Ghat in Sujanagar upazila of Pabna at around 7am on Wednesday, confirmed Sujanagar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Golam Mostafa.

On Tuesday at 2:55pm, the fire service’s diving team recovered the body of ASI Sadrul Hasan, 44, from the Kuthibari Ghat area in Shilaidah Union.

OC Mostafa said: “We received news around 7am on Wednesday that the body of ASI Mukul was found floating in the Padma River near Nazirganj Ferry Ghat. Later, the naval police and an investigation team recovered the body.”

Kushtia Kumarkhali Fire Service Station Officer SM Firoz Ahmed mentioned that the recovery was outside their jurisdiction: “The body of ASI Mukul Hossain, found in the Pabna area, will be managed by the Naval Police, Kumarkhali Thana Police, and Pabna Police.”

At 8am on Wednesday, as a fire service team prepared for further search operations, the Kumarkhali OC confirmed the recovery of ASI Mukul’s body, which was located approximately 45km downstream from the incident site.

The rescue operation was subsequently called off.

Attempts to reach Kumarkhali Thana OC Nazrul Islam were unsuccessful.

The incident occurred around 4am on Monday in the Kuthibari Ghat area of Shilaidah Union, where two ASIs from Kumarkhali police station went missing following an attack by miscreants while attempting to arrest a warrant-listed suspect.

Three others, including a Kumarkhali police officer and two local union members, were injured during the attack.

Four officers managed to swim to shore, but ASIs Sadrul and Mukul were swept away.

According to reports, six police officers were crossing the Padma River by boat to apprehend a suspect.

Miscreants, mistaking the officers for adversaries from a previous clash, attacked the boat and caused it to capsize.
