The body of a six-month-old child who went missing after falling into a drain during waterlogging in Chattogram has been recovered, 14 hours after the incident. The body was found floating nearly five kilometres away in the Chaktai canal.

Around 10am on Saturday, the body was spotted by locals near the leather warehouse area of Chaktai canal. On information, the Fire Service retrieved the body, confirmed Assistant Deputy Director of the Fire Service, Abdur Razzak.

Earlier, around 8pm on Friday night, the infant named Sehrin fell into a roadside drain during heavy rain in the Chawk Bazar area of Chattogram city. She was travelling with her mother and grandmother in a battery-powered rickshaw on their way to a relative’s house.

Eyewitness Md Raju, a local businessman, told journalist that due to water on the road, the rickshaw driver accidentally veered into the adjacent drain. Though the mother initially held on to the child, the strong current eventually swept her away.

A combined rescue operation involving the army, police, fire service, and city corporation continued throughout the night but failed to locate the child until the body was discovered the next morning.

In a similar incident in June 2024, the body of an eight-year-old was recovered from a canal between Paschim Gosaildanga and Abidar Para in the port police station area.
