A Correspondent, Bogura:
The authorities of Prisons Directorate have temporarily dismissed five individuals, including the Deputy Jailer and Chief guard of Bogura Central jail, following the escape of four inmates through the roof of the jail on Wednesday (June 26).
Colonel Sheikh Sujaur Rahman, Additional Inspector General of Prisons Directorate, confirmed the development on Friday afternoon, adding that Deputy Jailer Hossainuzzaman, Chief Guard Abdul Matin, and three others were temporarily dismissed due to their negligence.
Additionally, departmental cases have been filed against three more individuals, he said.
According to Superintendent of Police Sudip Kumar Chakrabarty, the inmates had been planning the escape for a long time. On Tuesday night, they cut the roof of the condemned cell and used a blanket as a ladder to escape. The police apprehended them at a market near the jail at around 4:30 am on Wednesday.
The jail authorities informed the police at 3:56 am, after which all police stations and patrol teams were alerted. The escaped prisoners were captured by a team of police from the Sadar Police outpost and taken to the Detective Branch (DB) office.
The escapees are Nazrul Islam alias Majnu from Diadangga, Bhurungamari, Kurigram (inmate number 998); Amir Hossain from Fazarkandi, Madhabdi, Narsingdi (inmate number 5105); Md. Zakaria, son of Bogura’s Kahalu municipality mayor Abdul Mannan (inmate number 3685); and Farid Sheikh from Kuturbari Pashchimpara, Bogura (inmate number 4252).
Following the incident, the district administration formed a probe committee to look into the matter.
District Commissioner Saiful Islam told the media that Bogura Jail, built during the British era, is very old and in a dilapidated state. He noted that the section of the roof where the escape occurred had no reinforcing rods.
The inmates had tied a gamcha (thin towel) to the roof and made a hole to escape. He emphasized the need for repairs and the installation of a security checkpoint in the area from which the prisoners escaped.
