Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister in the face of the students’ movement and left the country. In the meantime, Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman announced the formation of an interim government to run the country.
According to the constitution, other ministers of the cabinet, ministers of state and deputy ministers are deemed to have resigned after the resignation of the prime minister. The cabinet was dissolved.
However, the constitution also mentions that ministers, state ministers and deputy ministers can continue their duties until the new government is formed.
Hundreds of people have lost their lives across the country in recent days in the conflict surrounding the quota reform movement. At one stage of the movement, the Anti-discrimination Student Movement held a ‘Long March to Dhaka’ program on Monday (August 5) to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. In the meantime, the government issued a curfew for an indefinite period from 6 pm on Sunday, and announced a three-day general holiday.
But thousands of people broke the curfew on Monday and went towards Shahbagh in the capital. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left the country with a resignation letter to the President.
