Police have recovered cheques worth Tk 2.25 crore from the residence of Abdur Razzak Bin Sulaiman Riyad, a former leader of the Students against Discrimination (SAD), who is already in police custody in an extortion case.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) disclosed the latest information during a press briefing on Wednesday.
Razzak and three others were arrested on Saturday while allegedly extorting money at the residence of Shammi Ahmed, a former lawmaker from the Awami League regime, in Gulshan.
The following day, a Dhaka court placed the four on seven-day remand each.
All four were members of the Democratic Students’ Council and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement—both groups linked to last year’s student uprising against the Awami League government. Following their arrest, both organisations expelled the members.
During the remand hearing on Sunday, Additional Public Prosecutor Md Shamsuddoha Sumon told the court: “These are not ordinary criminals. Since August 5 of last year, this group has been compiling lists of homes belonging to Awami League leaders in Dhanmondi, Gulshan, and Banani, and extorting money… We need to identify who else is involved and the full extent of their operations.”
