Bangladesh’s Chess Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman died after feeling ill while playing in the National Chess Championship.
Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman suffered a cardiac arrest while playing in the 12th round of the National Chess Championship on Friday (July 5).
After being rushed to the hospital, the doctors declared him dead.
The death of Grandmaster Zia has cast a shadow of mourning on the sports arena in the country.
It is learned that Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman was in a good position against Grandmaster Enamul Hossain Rajib. He suddenly felt dizzy. He was then rushed to Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital.
Born in 1974, Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman won the title of international in 1993 and became the second grandmaster of the country in 2002. He also has the highest 2570 rating among Bangladeshi chess players.
In 1988, Ziaur Rahman became the National Chess Champion for the first time. He is also a record 14-time champion in the tournament, whereas the remaining four Grandmasters have won a combined 16 times.
