Speakers at a workshop on Wednesday (Jan 28) said south-western part of Bangladesh is one of the disaster prone zones of the globe owing to its geographical location as well as natural reasons. Due to climate change the frequency and intensity of disasters are increasing, threaten lives and livelihood. A large number of people are become ultra poor due to disaster and climate change effect every year.
The discussant said climate change had left an adverse impact on the coastal belt of the country where storms, cyclones, tidal surges, droughts, river erosion and water-logging are now common.
Speakers said that further threats arise from global climate change, especially sea level rise along with its salinity, which has already caused death to many big trees of the largest mangrove forest Sundarbans.
They get a clear concept on terms of climate change, global warming, loss and damage both economic and non-economic, safe water and sanitation initiating locally and in both national and global perspectives. They hoped the participants will raise their voice for making a better environment in decision making and policy formulation by multi-actor partnership.
ADAMS arranged the “Multi-Actor partnership on climate-related loss and damage, supporting the establishment of the national mechanism on loss and damage in Bangladesh” in association with Germanwatch held at ADAMS auditorium under Daulatpur thana in Khulna city.
Additional Divisional Commissioner (general) of Khulna Abu Syed Md Monjur Alam was addressed in the program as chief guest. Director of Institute of Disaster Management (IDM) of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) Prof Dr Md Nurunnabi Mollah, Teacher of Agro Technology Discipline of Khulna University Prof Dr Md Yasin Ali, Head of Environmental Science Discipline of Khulna University Prof Dr Md Mujibur Rahman, Head of Agro Technology Discipline of Khulna University Prof Md Rezaul Islam, Head of Urban and Rural Planning Discipline of Khulna University Prof Dr Md Zakir Hossain, Teacher of Forestry and Wood Technology Discipline Prof Dr Md Nazmus Sadath, Chief Planning Officer of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Md Abir Ul Zabbar, Managing Director of International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD) Md Sakib Huq, Chief Health Officer of KCC Dr Sharif Shamuel Islam, Planning Officer of Khulna Development Authority (KDA) Md Tanvir Ahmed spoke on the occasion. Executive Director of ADAMS SM Ali Aslam presided over the function. Associate Professor of IDM of KUET Dr Anjum Tasnuva presented the key-note papers.
The speakers blamed rich countries for prevailing global climatic situation and suggested long-term economic and socio development framework to resolve the effects of climatic change.
