A Dhaka court has declared BNP leader Ishraque Hossain as mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) after cancelling the results of the 2020 DSCC election.

Dhaka’s First Joint District Judge Md Nurul Islam, who is in charge of the Election Tribunal, pronounced the judgement on Thursday.

Ishraque’s lawyer Rafiqul Islam confirmed the matter to the journalists.

Ishraque Hossain contested the DSCC election for the post of mayor held on 1 February 2020. On 3 March 2020, he filed a case with the Election Tribunal challenging the DSCC election and its results, citing irregularities, corruption and lack of credibility.

Eight officials concerned, including then Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda, returning officer Md Abdul Baten, and DSCC Mayor Fazle Noor Taposh were made respondents in the case.

The Dhaka South and North City Corporations Polls were held on 1 February 2020, where Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and Atiqul Islam won from south and north respectively. The Election Commission issued the gazette notification over the polls results on 2 February 2020.
