A court has ordered the seizure of the tax records of former education minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel on charges of acquiring wealth beyond known sources of income.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib issued the order on Sunday following a petition by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
ACC Deputy Director Kamalesh Mondal submitted the petition on behalf of the ACC, which was subsequently approved by the court.
In its petition, the ACC alleged that Nowfel had illegally acquired immovable and movable assets worth Tk2.27 crore, inconsistent with his declared sources of income.
According to the petition, suspicious transactions amounting to Tk113.89 crore were conducted through 41 bank accounts, linked to offences such as money laundering, corruption, and bribery.
The petition also claimed that Nowfel had transferred or converted illegally obtained wealth to conceal its illicit sources, committing punishable offences under the Anti-Corruption Act.
