Court orders to send Manik to jail

Retired justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik was produced before the court showing arrested in a murder case filed with Badda Police Station in Dhaka.

Following the hearing, he was sent to jail.

The court of Sylhet Judicial Magistrate-1 Alamgir Hossain passed the order on Saturday (August 24). Earlier, he was produced before the court at 4:10pm.

Sylhet district police’s court inspector Jamshed Alam said Manik told the court that he was physically sick. Taking the matter into cognizance, the court ordered to provide him treatment according to the jail code. Since the accused was a former justice, the court also directed the authorities concern to provide him necessary facilities as per the jail code.

The angry people started demonstration when the police van with retired justice Manik on board was entering the court premises on Saturday afternoon. Later, the people threw rotten eggs and shoes at Manik when he being taken to the court. At one stage, they tried to assault him physically. However, police took him to the dock giving necessary security.

On Friday night, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel detained Manik when he was trying to flee to India illegally through Dona border under Kanaighat upazila in Sylhet district.

Then the BGB personnel handed him over to the Kanaighat Police Station early Saturday morning. Police said a case was pending against him with Badda Police Station in Dhaka.

On Wednesday (August 21), a murder case was filed against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 430 others with Badda Police Station.

The name of justice Shamsuddin Ahmed Manik was included in the list.

It may be mentioned that on Thursday (August 22) last, a case was filed against retired justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) president Hasanul Huq Inu, and Workers Party president Rashed Khan Menon for making derogatory remarks against the Zia family.
