Crops and vegetables damaged due to flood in Gaibandha

Standing crops with summer vegetables of TK 76 crore were damaged due to a flood that prolonged in the district.

The crops with summer vegetables farmed on 6436 hectares of land had been affected due to the flood that occurred at the first week of this month. Of them, vegetables and crops produced on 3973 hectares of land had been damaged fully.

This was disclosed by the deputy director (DD) of department of agricultural extension (DAE) here Md Khorshed Alam Sarker to this correspondent over mobile phone this morning as the main focal person of the department.

The deputy director (DD) also said the farmers of different shoals located on the eastern side of the Brahmaputra River and river basins on the western side of the river under Sundarganj, Sadar, Sundarganj and Fulchhariupazilas of the district farmed the vegetable and crops during the Kharip-2 season with an expectation to earn economic profit against the varieties but their hopes and aspiration were nipped as the crops and vegetable were damaged for remaining it under flood water for few days at a stretch.

The crops and vegetables included jute, maize, Ropa Aus, groundnut, Aman seed bed, banana, chili, and lady’s finger, he continued to say.

The price of the damaged crops has been estimated at TK 76 crore, he added. The DD also informed the higher authority concerned about the matter, he concluded.
