A man has allegedly stabbed his nephew to death during an altercation over an unpaid debt in Chattogram’s Patiya Upazila.
The incident took place in Haidgaon Union’s Hajipara area on Saturday night.
The victim, identified as 22-year-old Md Russell, was the son of Jamal Mia, said Abu Zayed Md Nazmun Nur, chief of Patiya Police Station.
His uncle, Md Jalal, fled the scene after the attack, according to the police.
Jalal runs a tea stall in Hathazari and rarely stays at his home in Patiya.
“A heated argument broke out between the two over the debt. During the confrontation, Jalal stabbed Russell in the neck, leading to his death,” said Nur.
Inspector Ataur Rahman from Patiya Police Station said Jalal is currently on the run.
Jalal visited his home on Saturday and became embroiled in a dispute with his nephew over money, he said, citing family members. At one point, Jalal grabbed a knife and stabbed Russell on both sides of his neck.
The family rushed Russell to the Patiya Upazila Health Complex, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
His body has been sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for an autopsy, the inspector said.
