International Desk:
At least 60 people have been killed after gunmen attacked a packed concert venue on the outskirts of Moscow, Russian intelligence said. More than 100 were wounded at the Crocus City Hall, the FSB Federal Security Service added.
The Islamic State group has claimed it carried out the attack. Russia has not commented on it yet.
Dramatic video shows panicked concertgoers taking cover as shots and explosions ring out. A large fire engulfed the roof of the complex and Russia’s National Guard is searching for the gunmen.
The White House said it is working to find out more about the situation and Ukraine has denied any involvement in the attack.
Video footage from the site of the attack, the Crocus City Hall concert venue, shows the vast complex, which is home to both the music hall and a shopping center, on fire with smoke billowing into the air. State-run RIA Novosti reported the armed individuals “opened fire with automatic weapons” and “threw a grenade or an incendiary bomb, which started a fire.” They then “allegedly fled in a white Renault car,” the news agency said.
Attackers dressed in camouflage uniforms entered the building on Friday, opened fire and threw a grenade or incendiary bomb, according to a journalist for the RIA Novosti news agency at the scene.
Fire quickly spread through the Crocus City concert hall in Moscow’s northern Krasnogorsk suburb, as smoke filled the building and screaming visitors rushed to emergency exits.
The Russian Foreign Ministry called the incident a “bloody terrorist attack”. The Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack.
In a post on its own Telegram channel after the incident, ISIS claimed responsibility, according to Reuters; However, the IS post could not be independently verified.
