Default loans in the banking sector hit an all-time high of Tk2,11,391 crore at the end of June this year, as per the latest Bangladesh Bank data.
Such loans rose by Tk29,096 crore between March and June, from Tk1,82,295 crore as of 30 March.
The disbursed loans at the end of June stood at Tk16,83,396 crore. Of the amount, Tk2,11,391 crore became defaulted, which is 12.56% of the total disbursed loans.
Soured loans stood at only Tk22,481 crore in 2009 when the Awami League came to power before its three more consecutive wins in general elections.
Economists said default loans will rise if defaulters continue to get special facilities.
