Al-Amin Hossain, Belkuchi:
A sudden cold wave has swept across the country, bringing bone-chilling temperatures and dense fog that have disrupted daily life. To cope with the severe cold, a massive rush of shoppers has been observed at winter clothing markets across Belkuchi upazila in Sirajganj.
Since early morning, large crowds have been seen at Belkuchi Municipal Market, Dhukuriabera Bazar, Rajapur Bazar, and other key shopping areas, including roadside stalls and footpath shops. People of all ages—from children to the elderly—have been purchasing sweaters, jackets, blankets, mufflers, caps, and shawls to protect themselves from the cold.
Traders said that the sudden drop in temperature has caused the demand for winter garments to multiply several times. Low- and middle-income families, in particular, are flocking to footpath shops in search of affordable warm clothing. Many shopkeepers reported struggling to handle customers from morning till late night due to the overwhelming crowd.
Shoppers said the intensity of the cold has increased sharply over the past few days. Concerned about cold-related illnesses, especially among children and elderly family members, many are buying winter clothes in advance. However, some buyers complained that prices of winter garments have risen slightly compared to previous years.
Meanwhile, health experts have advised extra caution for children and senior citizens during this cold spell. They recommended wearing adequate warm clothing, avoiding exposure to cold, and refraining from unnecessary outdoor activities.
Local businessmen believe that if the cold wave continues, the pressure on Belkuchi’s winter clothing markets is likely to increase further in the coming days.
