Derogatory remarks on energy minister: Amir Hamza faces defamation case of Tk 100 cr in Sirajganj

An application to file a defamation case of Tk 100 crore against Islamic Speaker Amir Hamza was submitted to a court in Sirajganj on March 30 for making Derogatory remarks on Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku.

Advocate S.M. Nazmul Islam lodged the complaint at the Sirajganj Sadar Amli Court on Monday (March 30) afternoon. Suman Kumar Karmakar, Judge of the court accepted the application and awaited the order.

According to the case application, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku is the son of a respected Muslim family and has been involved in various religious and social activities for a long time. Mufti Amir Hamza publicly called him an ‘atheist’ in connection with a speech he gave at a ceremony to honor freedom fighters on March 26, which is alleged to have hurt his personal and religious image.

The plaintiff’s lawyers said that, such derogatory remarks have angered not only an individual but also the general public. The case, filed under Section 500 of the Penal Code, has demanded exemplary punishment against the accused.
