Professor Zia Rahman (60), dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and founding chairman of the Criminology Department of Dhaka University, has passed away (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Rajiun).
He died of a heart attack around four o’clock this Saturday morning. After being taken to a private hospital in the capital, the doctor declared him dead.
Zia Rahman has served in the teachers’ association and various administrative positions during his nearly three decades of service at Dhaka University. He was known as a pro-Awami teacher leader. In January 2022, he was elected Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences.
Zia Rahman lived in Shaheed Munir Chowdhury Bhavan of the Dhaka University campus. Professor Hasan A Shafi of the Anthropology Department rushed him to the emergency department of Lab Aid Hospital when he felt ill at night and he died there.
After receiving the news of Zia Rahman’s death, the teachers and students of Dhaka University rushed to Lab Aid Hospital. Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor ASM Maqsud Kamal was also rushed to the hospital.
The Vice-Chancellor told reporters at the hospital that Zia Rahman’s funeral will be held at the Central Mosque of Dhaka University after Johor today.
