Dipu Moni placed on 4-day remand, Arif on 5-day

A Dhaka court has placed former education minister Dipu Moni on a 4-day remand and former deputy sports minister Arif Khan Joy on a 5-day remand in a murder case.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sultan Sohag Uddin passed the order after Mohammadpur Police Station Inspector Tofazzal Hossain filed a remand petition Tuesday (20 August).

Earlier on the day, police sought 10 days remand for Dipu Moni and Arif Khan Joy in connection with the murder of grocery store owner Abu Sayeed in Mohammadpur.

Meanwhile, pro-BNP-Jamaat lawyers gathered at the CMM court premises and chanted slogans against Dipu Moni as she was being taken to court around 3:20pm.

In the remand application, the investigating officer stated that there is information indicating the involvement of the accused in the murder. The remand is necessary for uncovering the details of the crime, identifying the individuals directly involved, and gathering their names and addresses.

The officer requested the court to approve a 10-day remand for Dipu Moni, 51, and Arif Khan Joy, 53 to ensure a fair and comprehensive investigation.

Dipu Moni and Arif Khan Joy were arrested yesterday in connection with a murder case filed with Mohammadpur police station and will be presented in court Tuesday, confirmed Mohammadpur police station Inspector Tofazzel Hossain.

Dipu Moni was arrested from Baridhara DOHS in the capital and taken into the custody of the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), a DMP official confirmed the matter to yesterday (19 August).

Former deputy minister of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Arif Khan Joy was also arrested in the same case from Dhanmondi area of the capital yesterday.

They were both arrested under Sections 302/149/34 of the Penal Code.

Dipu Moni served as the education minister in the Awami league government. When reelected on 7 January this year, she served as the social welfare minister.

She was appointed the first female foreign minister of Bangladesh on 6 January 2009, after victory for the Awami League-led Grand Alliance on 29 December 2008.

She is the joint secretary of the Awami League.

Arif Khan Joy was elected as a member of parliament for the Netrokona-2 constituency in 2014.

The former professional footballer served as the deputy minister for the Ministry of Youth and Sports from 2014 to 2018.
