A court in Sirajganj on Sunday sentenced four persons to death and eight others to life term imprisonment in a double murder case.

The court also fined Tk 50,000 each of those, who were rewarded with the death penalty.

On the other hand, those, who were sentenced to life term have been fined Tk 25,000 each, in default, they will have to suffer three more months in Jail.

Advocate Hamidul Islam Dulal, Additional Public Prosecutor (PP) of the court confirmed the matter to the journalists.

Those, who got death sentence, are Hasanur Rahman Hasu, Kawsar Ali, Moazzem Hossain Rintu and Jahidul Islam Jahid of Chakpangashi village in Ullapara upazila of the district.

The eight other convicted are Motaleb Hossain, Rezaul Karim, Saddam Hossain, Monir Hossain, Ashraf Ali, Bellal Hossain, Dulal Hossain and Abdul Awal of the same village.

The court also acquitted 39 other persons as the allegations brought against them could not be proved.

According to the prosecution brief, a long standing feud had been going on between Saiful Islam of the Chakpangashi village and his neighbor Abul Kalam over several issues.

On January 21, 2017, the accused led by Hasanur Rahman Hasu equipped with several lethal sharp weapons attacked on Saiful Islam and his brother Sona Mian, Abul Kalam and Mokbul Hossain at their home. The attackers also chopped them mercilessly and vandalized their homestead.

Hearing their hue and cry, locals rushed to the spot and rescued them in critical condition. The injured were taken to Sirajganj General Hospital. But, doctors referred them to Dhaka for better treatment as their condition deteriorated further. Of the injured, Mokbul and Saiful succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.

After the incident, Shahidul Islam, son of Nizam Uddin of the same village filed a case accusing 51 persons. The Investigation Officer (IO) submitted a charge sheet to the court on October 19, 2017.

During the trial, the court accepted hearing of 21 witnesses.

After a long wait, the court handed down the verdict on Sunday.
