The newly formed interim government’s adviser for the Ministries of Finance and Planning, Dr Salehuddin Ahmed, on Friday said Bangladesh’s economy should be rejuvenated, braving various economic challenges, especially in the financial and banking sector.

“The pace and operations of our businesses have slowed down while there are various challenges in the economy including in the banking and financial sector. We will have to rejuvenate our economy,” he said.

Dr Salehuddin, also a former central bank governor, said this while talking to reporters after the allocation of portfolios of the chief adviser and other advisers of the interim government.

Noting that it was the first priority of the interim government to restore the law and order situation across the country, he said they would also take strong strides to offset the impact that has been put on the lives and livelihood of the countrymen due to violence centring the recent anti-discriminatory quota reform movement.

The adviser also vowed to restore discipline in the banking, financial, and capital markets. “We will try to fix all those sectors.”

Earlier, the chief adviser of the newly-formed interim government Dr Muhammad Yunus and 13 other advisers paid homage to the martyrs of the language movement by placing wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar on Friday morning.

At first, Dr Yunus placed the wreath around 11:15 a.m. amid light rain and stood in solemn silence for some time as a mark of profound respect for the memories of the language movement martyrs. Later, the other advisers of the newly formed interim government also paid homage to the language movement martyrs by placing wreaths.

Prior to that, the chief adviser and other 13 advisers paid homage to the martyrs of the Liberation War by placing wreaths at the National Memorial in Savar.

They stood in solemn silence for some time as a mark of profound respect to the memories of the martyrs of the 1971 War of Liberation.

Nobel Laureate and globally acclaimed economist Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus was sworn-in as the Chief Adviser of the interim government last night.

He took over the responsibility three days after the fall of Awami League government in a student-led mass movement.
