A girl was saved from underage marriage following timely intervention of the Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Md. Mainul Islam Khan in Kaliganj upazila of Satkhira district.

Acting on a tip-off, a raid was conducted in Ujirpur village of Champaful Union of the upazila on Saturday, when a marriage ceremony was arranged centering the wedding of Humaira Anju, 12, daughter of Monirul Islam of the village and Abdullah Al Rafi, 15, son of Rafiqul Islam of Keshabpur Upazila of Jessore.

Md. Mainul Islam Khan reached to the spot and foiled the child marriage instantly. With the aim to set it as an example, the executive magistrate also imposed fine Tk 20,000 to the daughter’s parent and Tk 40,000 to the groom party on charge of violating the child marriage act.
