After weeks of higher prices, the price of eggs in Dhaka’s kitchen markets has come down by Tk5-10 per dozen. Meanwhile, prices of chicken, vegetables, rice, and fish have remained mostly stable, according to vendors.

Despite on Fridays typically being busier, persistent rain led to fewer shoppers on Friday (May 30), which helped keep prices in check.

Visits to Shahjadpur, Notun Bazar, and Badda markets this morning showed that eggs were being sold at Tk130-140 per dozen, down from Tk140-145 last week. A month ago, eggs cost Tk115-120.

The price of broiler chicken remained unchanged, selling at Tk160-170 per kg, while Sonali chicken was selling at Tk260-280 per kg.

Jalal Hossain, a seller at Khilbarirtek, said, “Chicken prices usually drop before or after Eid-ul-Adha, and this year is no different. Egg supply is slightly lower during the monsoon, but even at current prices, farmers aren’t making much profit. Production costs are high, if prices fall any further, they will incur losses.”

Vegetable prices also showed little variation. Most items such as pointed gourd, okra, snake gourd (chichinga), and ridge gourd (jhinga), were being sold for Tk40-60 per kg.

Other vegetables like yardlong beans (borboti), taro stolons (kochur loti), ucchta, and eggplant ranged between Tk60-80 per kg. Green chilli was being sold at Tk80 per kg.

Masum Hossain, a vegetable vendor at Shahjadpur “Due to the rain, both supply and customer turnout have been low. Many footpath vendors did not open their stalls today. It’s difficult to bring in produce in this weather, which is why prices haven’t changed much.”

In other essentials, onions were selling at Tk55-60 per kg, potatoes at Tk20-25, local garlic at Tk120-140, and imported garlic at Tk180-240.

Rice prices remained stable. Swarna rice was selling for Tk52-55 per kg, medium varieties such as BRRI-28, BRRI-29, and Pajam for Tk58-60, and finer varieties like Miniket between Tk70-82, down from Tk82-90 a month ago.

Moreover, Nazirshail was selling at Tk80-90, and Basmati at Tk95 per kg.

Beef was being sold at Tk780-800 per kg, while mutton was selling for Tk1,000-1,150.

Among fish, farmed koi was priced at Tk300-320 per kg, tilapia and pangas at Tk220-250, rui and katla at Tk320-450, and pabda at Tk400-500.
