Ekushey Padak-winning linguist Dr Mahbubul dies

Ekushey Padak-winning linguist, educationist and essayist Professor Dr Mahbubul Haque has died.

He breathed his last while undergoing treatment at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka on Wednesday night.

He had been suffering from heart and kidney diseases for a long time.

His body will be brought to his residence in Dhaka’s Bhatara from the hospital on Thursday noon. From there, his body will be taken to Chattogram following a namaz-e-janaza. He will be buried at his family graveyard there.

Dr Mahbubul was born at Madhukhali Upazila in Faridpur on November 3 in 1948.

He was awarded Bangla Academy Literature Award in 2018 and Ekushey Padak in 2019. He competed his graduation and post-graduation in Bengali Language and Literature from Chittagong University in 1969 and 1970 respectively. He obtained PhD degree from the same university in 1997.

Dr Mahbubul started his career as a teacher. He taught at Rangunia College and Chittagong University College. Later, he joined the Bangla department of Chittagong University as a lecturer and retired as a professor.

His notable books are ‘Bangla Bananer Niyom’, ‘Rabindra Sahitya’, ‘Rabindra Bhabna’, ‘Itihas O Sahitya’, ‘Sangskriti O Loksahitya Ebong Banglar Loksahitya: Somaj O Sangskriti’.
