A court in Chattogram on Sunday (May 2) sentenced Evaly Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Md Rasel and his wife Shamima Nasrin to one year of imprisonment each in a case filed for dishonouring bank cheques in 2021.
The court of Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate-6 Md Mohiuddin also imposed a financial penalty equivalent to the cheque amount on each of them, according to Assistant Public Prosecutor SM Hossain Shahed.
The convicts were identified as Md Rasel, MD and CEO of Evaly, and his wife Shamima Nasrin, who is also the Chairman of the company.
According to the case deposition, Evaly CEO Rasel issued a cheque for Tk 1.8 lakh through Mercantile Bank Limited’s Agrabad Branch to Md Jasim Uddin Abid of the city’s Hamzarbagh area on 1 November 2021. The cheque bounced on the same date.
A case was subsequently filed on 15 November of the same year.
Advocate Sahriear Yeasir Arafat Tanim, the plaintiff’s lawyer, said that this is the first time the accused, Evaly CEO Rasel, has been handed any punishment amid the numerous cases against him.
He added that the court pronounced the verdict in the absence of the accused.
