In a fraud case, a Dhaka court has sentenced Evaly’s Managing Director, Mohammad Rassel, and his wife, Chairperson Shamima Nasrin, to three years of rigorous imprisonment each.

In addition to the jail term, they have each been fined Tk5,000, with an additional six months of imprisonment in case of non-payment.

The verdict was delivered on Sunday by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Minhazur Rahman. The plaintiff’s lawyer, Sakibul Islam, confirmed the matter, stating that the accused are currently absconding. The court has issued both conviction and arrest warrants against them.

According to the case details, Evaly used flashy advertisements across various platforms to promote and sell products.

Attracted by these, Mujahid Hasan Fahim ordered a Yamaha R15 motorcycle from Evaly on February 20, 2021, and made full payment. However, the company failed to deliver the motorcycle within the promised 45 days.

When Fahim followed up at Evaly’s Dhanmondi office, the authorities issued him a cheque for Tk5 lakh. But they later requested him not to deposit the cheque on the due date, citing insufficient funds. Trusting their words, he refrained from depositing the cheque. Despite repeated attempts to recover his money, he was not refunded. Eventually, he sent a legal notice, but that also went unanswered.
