Ex Begum Rokeya University Proctor detain over Abu Sayeed murder

Shariful Islam, the former proctor of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur, has been detained in connection with the shooting death of Abu Sayeed during the anti-discrimination student movement.

Superintendent ABM Zakir Hossain, Rangpur Police Bureau of Investigation confirmed the arrest to the media.

The PBI official said on Tuesday morning that the plaintiff in the case has provided the court with video footage and other information and data in the form of statements as specific evidence against Shariful Islam and seven others in the Abu Sayeed murder case. Shariful Islam was detained around 9 pm on Monday for the sake of investigation of the case. He will be sent to court today.

He is accused of being present at the scene and giving instructions to the police to shoot. Earlier, Metropolitan Police ASI Amir Ali and Constable Sujan Chandra Roy were arrested in this case, he added.

On July 16, during an anti-discrimination movement in Rangpur, Begum Rokeya University student Abu Sayeed was killed in police firing. On August 18, Abu Sayeed’s elder brother Ramzan Ali filed a case against 17 people, including former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Rangpur Range Abdul Baten, and former Commissioner of Rangpur Metropolitan Police Md. Moniruzzaman, in connection with the murder of Abu Sayeed.
