UNB, Sylhet:

A Sylhet court has granted bail to former Supreme Court Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik in a case filed over attempting to illegally cross into India through the district’s Kanaighat border.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (Kanaighat) Anjan Kanti Das passed the order on Tuesday morning.

However, Manik will remain in Sylhet jail due to other pending cases against him. He is expected to be transferred to Dhaka soon, said Sylhet District Court Inspector Md Jamshaid Ali.

Manik was initially detained on the night of 23 August while attempting to flee to India through the Dhana border in Kanaighat Upazila. Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) apprehended him with the help of locals. The following morning, he was handed over to Kanaighat Police Station.
