Former army officer Major General Ziaul Ahsan – the former Director General (DG) of the National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre (NTMC) – was arrested late last night from Dhaka’s Khilkhet area.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) announced in a brief message on Friday that Ziaul was arrested on Thursday night in the Khilkhet area based on secret information.
On August 6, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Directorate issued a statement saying Major General Ziaul Ahsan had been relieved of his duties.
Till his dismissal, Maj Gen Ziaul served as the DG of NTMC from 2022. Prior to that, he was a director of NTMC.
Ziaul’s career has been marked by rapid ascension and controversy. In 2009, he became the deputy commanding officer of RAB-2 and was swiftly promoted to lieutenant colonel, assuming the role of director of the elite force’s intelligence wing at its headquarters within the same year.
His tenure has been shadowed by serious allegations, including involvement in forced disappearances and assassinations. These controversies have cast a long shadow, leading to heightened scrutiny.
