A court in Narayanganj on Friday sent former city corporation mayor Selina Hayat Ivy to jail in a case filed for killing one Minarul in Siddhirganj.
Narayanganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Moinuddin Kadir passed the order following a hearing after the ex-mayor was produced before the court hours after her arrest, confirmed the court’s police Inspector Md Qayum Khan.
Earlier, the issue of apprehending Ivy heightened tensions among her followers who took position in front of her residence to prevent the arrest.
The police raided Ivy’s house in the Deobhog area around 11:30pm on Thursday to arrest her. Hearing the news, followers of the ex-mayor and Awami League leaders and activists gathered outside her residence.
They also blocked roads leading to Ivy’s house by placing bamboo, pushcarts and vans there to thwart her arrest. Besides, announcements were also made from mosques in the neighbourhood urging the local people to gather in front of Ivy’s house.
As locals surrounded the residence, the police personnel who came to arrest Ivy got stuck inside the house, while additional police members reached the spot after 12am Friday.
Inside her house, Ivy addressed her supporters, saying, “Tell them [the police] that I will not leave home at night. If they want to arrest me, they must come during daylight hours.”
After an overnight discussion with Ivy’s supporters, senior police officials entered her house at dawn and apprehended her around 5:45am.
In another incident, vehicles of police and Rapid Action Battalion came under attack by a group of people at the Kalir Bazar intersection on Bibi Road while Ivy was being escorted to the office of the Detective Branch of police following her arrest.
