A Dhaka court today placed former food minister Advocate Qamrul Islam and former MP from Dhaka-7 constituency Solaiman Selim on a four-day remand.
Following a hearing on Wednesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sharifur Rahman granted police four days to question them in their custody.
The suspects were brought to the court for the hearing.
The investigation officer of the case, Sub-Inspector (SI) Ferdous Zaman of the Motijheel Zonal Team, applied for seven-day remand. At that time, the lawyer for the accused applied for cancellation of the remand and bail.
Public Prosecutor (PP) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Court Omar Faruk Farooqui opposed the bail for the state. After both hearings, the court rejected the bail application and ordered a remand.
According to the case documents, the BNP called a grand rally on Oct 28, 2023, in Dhaka and the Awami League organised a rally to foil the opposition party’s event.
With the help of the police force, the BNP rally was attacked with an aim to kill and abduct its leaders and activists, the case dossier says.
Jubo Dal leader Shamim was killed in the attack. A case was filed with the Paltan Police Station on Sept 24, 2024, over his death.
Khaled Hasan Saifullah was killed on 18 July while taking part in an anti-discrimination rally in the Lalbagh Government Residential Colony area. His father Kamrul Hasan on 19 August filed the case against food minister Advocate Qamrul Islam 52 including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
