A former union parishad member has been given life-term imprisonment by a court in Rajbari in a case filed over abducting and raping a school girl in 2022 under Pangsha Police Station area in the district.

Md Sabbir Foyaz, Rajbari Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge, delivered the verdict on Tuesday afternoon.

The convict is Zamrul Islam Mandal, 52, a resident of Joykriswhna village under Bahadurpur union at Pangsha upazila in the district. He is former UP member of Ward no 8.

The court also fined the convict Tk 20,000 in the case.

According to the case statement, on February 25 of 2022, the girl was kidnapped from her room. Later, the victim’s father filed a case with Pangsha Model Police Station.

Following the case file, police conducted a raid at Zamrul’s house on March 1, 2022, and rescued the girl from there.

Police also arrested Zamrul Islam from the house.
