Kazipur Correspondent:
An alleged extortionist set a house of businessman on fire in Sonamukhi Baza’ar area in Kazipur upazila of Sirajganj district on Saturday night due to refusal to pay extortion.
After the incident, locals reached to the spot and extinguished the fire after a fanatic effort.
Centering the incident, a written complaint has been submitted to Kazipur police station, which is now under investigation, said Nur-e-Alam, Officer in Charge of Kazipur police station.
According to the complaint, Reza Babu, son of Rezaul Karim of Sonamukhi Baza’ar introducing himself as a coordinator of Anti-discrimination student movement and supporter of BNP had been demanding big sum of extortion from local businessman Nayon Hossain. As the businessman Nayon refused to pay the extortion, Babu got anger and set his (Nayon) house on fire at the dark of night after closing the main gate in which no one can come out from inside of the house.
Sensing the matter, locals reached to the spot and lent their helping hands to douse the fire. But, Babu, who set the house on fire, tried to intercept them from fighting against fire.
OC Nur-e-Alam also said, “We have started investigation into the matter after receiving the complaint. Necessary action would be taken after completion of the probe.”
It is mentionable that, after fall of the Awami League government on August 5, a section of youths introducing themselves as students’ leaders or BNP leaders have started extorting at different places in the country with the aim to make money overnight and make the country unstable. Like other parts of the country, some youths have been engaged in such malpractices introducing themselves as BNP men or coordinators of Anti-discrimination students’ movement.
Experts said, it is high time to bring them under control. Law enforcers should identify them and bring to book to maintain the law and order situation. Due to rising of random extortion, peace loving people can’t sleep at night and even many can’t stay homes as well as many can’t conduct their business peacefully.
